Salt substitution reduces mortality, cardiovascular events, studies suggest

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that salt substitutes may reduce the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and major cardiovascular events. However, the evidence was based on low-certainty evidence and may be more applicable to older populations following Asian diets. Salt substitution resulted in absolute reductions in mortality and cardiovascular events, with no increase in serious adverse events. While salt substitutes may be beneficial for reducing cardiovascular risk, individual circumstances should be considered. Implementing potassium-enriched salts into diets was also suggested as a way to improve blood pressure control and promote healthier societies.
