Rising Complaints of Unauthorized Obamacare Plan-Switching and Sign-Ups Trigger Concern

Federal and state regulators are not adequately addressing the issue of rogue health insurance brokers making unauthorized policy switches for Affordable Care Act policyholders. This problem has led to policyholders being switched to plans that don’t include their doctors or medications, or have higher deductibles. Low-income consumers are often targeted, as they might not notice the switch due to qualifying for zero-premium plans. CMS acknowledges the problem and is working on solutions, including identifying and sanctioning bad actors. State regulators are urging CMS to be more proactive in monitoring and preventing unauthorized switches. Improved oversight, enforcement, and coordination between state and federal agencies are needed to address this issue.
