Researchers create novel drug that can prevent flu-induced lung injury

Infection with the influenza virus can lead to life-threatening lung injury due to inflammation. Scientists have developed a new drug, UH15-38, that can prevent flu-induced lung damage by balancing inflammation and the immune response. In mouse models, the drug increased survival and reduced symptoms of influenza. It protected against lethal influenza doses, even when administered days after infection. The drug inhibits necroptosis, a highly inflammatory cell death pathway, while maintaining apoptosis, a non-inflammatory pathway. This approach reduces inflammation, preserves lung cells, and improves survival, offering a promising treatment for severe influenza infections.
