Consultant psychiatrist Prof Matthew Sadlier recommends that Ireland issue a public health warning about social media’s negative effects on young people, following in the footsteps of the US Surgeon General. He suggested implementing a system of ‘minimum usage pricing’ and requiring social media users to verify their identity to combat addiction. Although he did not propose a complete ban, he emphasized the detrimental impact of excessive social media use on mental health. The IMO recently discussed motions related to smartphone bans in primary schools and investigating Meta for harming young people’s mental health. Speakers at the IMO AGM also highlighted the need to address the dark side of social media.
