The research published in The Journal of Nuclear Medicine suggests that PET/MRI can improve diagnostic accuracy for prostate cancer patients and help avoid unnecessary biopsies. The study found that using the PRIMARY scoring system with PET/MRI results could avoid more than 80% of unnecessary biopsies while potentially missing one in eight clinically significant prostate cancer cases. By applying the Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) and the PRIMARY system, researchers found that patients with PI-RADS 3 lesions could benefit from 68Ga-PSMA PET/MRI before undergoing prostate biopsy, potentially reducing the need for unnecessary procedures and improving diagnostic accuracy.
