A new report from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health revealed a significant increase in the number of children waiting for outpatient appointments in Northern Ireland. The number of ongoing waits at paediatric departments rose from 8170 in June 2016 to 22,272 in June 2023, representing a 172.6% increase. The data does not include inpatient and day cases. The report also highlighted that the number of ongoing outpatient waits lasting more than a year increased from 578 to 6326 during the same period. Paediatrics was the second worst specialty in Northern Ireland in terms of increases to waiting lists after gynaecology.
