Oncologists Voice Ethical Concerns Over AI in Cancer Care

A recent survey of 204 US oncologists revealed ethical concerns about using artificial intelligence (AI) in cancer treatment decision-making. Most oncologists supported patient consent for AI use and believed they should be able to explain AI-based clinical decision models. However, few felt patients needed to understand AI models. When AI recommended a different treatment than the oncologist, most would present both options to the patient. Oncologists from academic settings were more likely to let the patient decide. Most oncologists felt responsible for protecting patients from biased AI but lacked confidence in identifying biased models. The study suggests rigorous assessment is needed before integrating AI into cancer care.
