A study published in The Lancet Neurology found that conditions affecting the nervous system, such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease, are the leading cause of disease burden worldwide. Neurodevelopmental disorders, age-related neurodegeneration, and emergent conditions like COVID-19 also impact the nervous system. The study estimated the global burden of 37 neurological disorders from 1990 to 2021, revealing that 3.40 billion people had a nervous system condition in 2021. The study highlighted regional disparities in disease burden and identified conditions like stroke, migraine, and epilepsy as significant contributors to nervous system health loss. The researchers emphasized the need for improved prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation strategies.
