The leading causes of death remained unchanged since 1990, except for the addition of Covid-19 in 2020 and 2021. The Global Burden of Disease study found that Covid-19 became the second-leading cause of death globally, impacting life expectancy negatively. Regional variations showed disparities in the impact of the pandemic, with some areas experiencing more significant losses in life expectancy. The study also highlighted persistent inequalities in global health, with failures in equitable distribution of resources. Despite successes in reducing deaths from certain diseases, there is a need for more global collaboration to address ongoing health challenges.
