Heavy alcohol use in middle-aged adults increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by affecting liver and pancreas function, which impacts blood sugar control. Research presented at the American Physiology Summit in Long Beach found that heavy drinkers had higher fasting glucose levels. While young adults may not experience severe glucose level impairment from heavy drinking, as the population ages, the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes increases. The study, conducted at the University of Texas at Arlington, recommended limiting alcohol consumption to reduce the risk of diabetes and other diseases. The research was funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
