The Mediterranean diet is known for its health benefits, including preventing cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease, and cancers. A recent study analyzed the impact of the Mediterranean diet on perinatal health during pregnancy. The study reviewed 23 articles and found that following the Mediterranean diet reduced the risk of gestational diabetes and small for gestational age babies. It also showed positive effects on metabolic health, reduced risk of pregnancy-induced hypertension, increased birth weight, and higher gestational age at delivery. Future studies should consider other factors and larger sample sizes to provide more comprehensive recommendations for diet during pregnancy.
