Simon Harris has appointed Colm Burke as the Minister of State for Public Health, Wellbeing, and the National Drugs Strategy. Burke, a Cork North Central TD and former Fine Gael health spokesperson, replaces Hildegarde Naughton in the role. Naughton was given a new position in special education and inclusion as part of a reshuffle. Burke now oversees the Citizens Assembly on Drugs, which made 36 recommendations including the decriminalization of drugs for personal use. The recommendations will be considered with urgency and are expected to lead to meaningful changes in the State’s response to drug issues, moving towards a health-led approach.
