A study published in JAMA Pediatrics found that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience suicidal thoughts and behaviors at a younger age than their peers without ASD. The study used data from the Interactive Autism Network and found that 40.5% of children with ASD expressed a wish to die, 19.3% wanted to end their own life, and 7.4% formulated a suicide plan. Additionally, the study found that 36.2% of children with ASD who expressed a wish to die had an early onset of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The study authors emphasized the lack of validated suicide risk screening tools and interventions for this age group.
