The Medical Schools Council warns that the UK’s ability to conduct scientific research and educate medical students is in jeopardy due to an ageing clinical academic workforce. Data shows that over a third of UK clinical academics are over 55 years old, with 65% of professors in the same age bracket. Without investment in recruiting and retaining younger academics, the UK risks losing vital expertise and knowledge in the medical field. In 2004, only 24% of UK clinical academics were over 55, highlighting the urgent need for investment in the workforce to ensure future success in scientific research and medical education.
