After Public Push, CMS Curbs Health Insurance Agents’ Access to Consumer SSNs

The federal ACA insurance enrollment system allowed insurance brokers access to full Social Security numbers, raising concerns about misuse. Complaints include rogue agents enrolling people in ACA coverage or switching plans without permission. The issue was highlighted in a KFF Health News article. After concerns were raised, CMS took action to mask the first six digits of SSNs on the federal site and direct enrollment partner platforms. While this fix is promising, unauthorized plan switching by rogue agents can still occur using basic information. The issue has led to frustration among licensed agents and concerns about consumer privacy.
