Adult Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Maria Davis-Pierre, a licensed mental health therapist, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at age 38 after years of attributing her symptoms to ADHD. She experienced exhaustion, depression, and fatigue common in adults on the spectrum. Many adults with autism spend their lives masking their symptoms, leading to burnout. Seeking a diagnosis in adulthood is becoming more common, allowing individuals to find their own community online. Psychologists recommend addressing sensory needs first and embracing strengths to lead happier lives. Women often struggle to receive a diagnosis due to their ability to mask symptoms. Davis-Pierre has used her diagnosis to help others, founding a business to support Black parents with children on the spectrum.
