Men are more likely to die in car crashes due to risky driving behaviors, but women are more likely to sustain serious injuries or be killed in crashes of similar severity. A recent study found that women arrive at trauma centers with signs of shock more often than men, regardless of injury severity. Women also have more pelvis and liver injuries, and surpass a shock index of 1.0 more frequently than men. The study suggests that sex-specific differences in crash injuries need to be considered in car safety engineering and medical treatment to ensure equity in car safety design. Further research is needed to understand these disparities.
