Women with premenstrual disorders have a higher risk of perinatal depression, and vice versa, according to recent research. The study found that almost 3% of women with perinatal depression had premenstrual disorders before pregnancy, compared to only 0.6% of unaffected women. This bidirectional relationship suggests a common underlying mechanism between the two conditions, which could help healthcare providers better target support for at-risk women. The study, which included over 900,000 pregnancies, highlights the importance of recognizing these susceptibilities in clinical practice. The findings may indicate that both disorders exist on a continuum and provide insight into potential biological mechanisms and risk factors.
