Current marketing for alcohol targets women, and social drinking is a significant part of American culture. Parenthood used to be a protective factor against excessive drinking, but that is changing. Stress is a major driver of alcohol misuse, and unique burdens lead many mothers to rely on alcohol. Public health experts fear a rise in alcohol-related liver disease among women, with significant costs for the nation. Adkins now works as a coach to help others stop drinking and published a book about her experience.
