A dangerous bacterial infection known as streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) is on the rise in Japan, with a record high of 941 cases reported last year. This year, 378 cases have been reported in just the first two months of 2024. The infection, caused by the Strep A bacterium, can lead to severe tissue damage, low blood pressure, organ failure, and death. Experts are concerned about the sudden increase, with some attributing it to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and reduced immunity. Symptoms of STSS include flu-like symptoms and organ failure, and risk factors include age, recent surgeries, skin injuries, viral infections, and certain medications. Preventative measures include good hand hygiene and covering while coughing or sneezing.
