New measures announced by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly will ban the sale of e-cigarettes at events for children, and their promotion near schools and at kids’ movies. These measures are part of an effort to reduce young people vaping, with a six-month lead-in period starting from September 23. The HSE will now have the power to conduct test purchases where minors can attempt to buy e-cigarettes to reveal non-compliant retailers. The announcement coincides with the twentieth anniversary of the workplace smoking ban in Ireland. However, concerns about growing smoking rates post-COVID have prompted calls for new and innovative policies for a tobacco-free Ireland.
