A recent RCSI study explores the current technology-enabled trends in surgery, highlighting the importance of supporting future technologies in health systems. The report, based on the input of 30 surgeons, surgical trainees, and researchers, identified biomaterials, robotics, digital platforms, data analytics, and 3D-reconstructive models as key technologies for surgery. Participants also foresee artificial intelligence, wearables, virtual/augmented reality, and genomic analysis becoming crucial in the next decade. While excited about personalized and less invasive surgeries, respondents expressed concerns about challenges like the learning curve for surgeons, data security, and appropriate technology use. The study suggests the need for a clear national strategy and increased investment in surgical technologies.
