Anthony Fauci, former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was hospitalized for nearly a week with West Nile virus infection, which was initially misdiagnosed as a bacterial or tick-borne disease. Fauci, a leader in the U.S. Covid-19 response, described the illness as the worst he has ever experienced. West Nile virus is spread by infected mosquitoes and can cause severe symptoms, such as fever, headache, and joint pain. While most people do not develop symptoms, older adults are at higher risk of serious illness. Fauci is recovering at home but expects it to take weeks to fully recover.
