Pandemic treaty: panel calls for “reset” to talks as negotiators miss deadline

admin

The negotiations for a global pandemic accord by the World Health Organization have hit a roadblock as member states missed the deadline to come up with a draft treaty by 24 May. Any agreement will likely take a year to reach as extensive negotiations are still needed. The accord aims to prevent a repeat of the global disaster seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Key sticking points include redistribution of health products, technology transfer, and financing for low and middle income countries. Nations are discussing how to change the negotiation process to overcome these challenges. The Intergovernmental Negotiating Body Bureau has called for a “reset process” to move negotiations forward.
