New WHO guidance can support transparent and informed engagement with the private sector

Kent Buse and Monika Arora highlight the need for WHO guidance on public sector engagement with the commercial sector to prevent non-communicable diseases. They discuss how the corporate playbook, initially used by the tobacco industry, has been adopted by other health harming industries. Despite the necessity of public-private engagement in some cases, it should be based on health principles and assessed for its benefits and risks. They commend WHO’s guidance for establishing processes to assess and mitigate risks in such engagements. Civil society is encouraged to support governments in transparent engagement with industry to achieve national NCD goals and protect public health and the environment.
