Let’s Speak Up for ALS!
May is both ALS and speech therapy awareness month! SNR is fortunate to be on the new Tulsa MDA team, and I’ve gotten the opportunity to personally know many local families affected by this tragic disease. Let’s spend this month raising awareness of the services available to help quality of life for those with ALS and the research opportunities available.
ALS is a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and affects the ability to walk, speak, swallow, and eventually even perform basic life functions such as breathing. SLPs who are experienced in progressive diseases can assist with the process of ordering a communication device and making swallowing accommodations throughout the disease course and progression.
Please visit and share our website page herewith more information as well as a video about the treatment options speech pathologists can offer to those with ALS to improve quality of life!
Visit MDA Tulsa’s websiteherefor more local resources. There is an amazing monthly Tulsa ALS support group among many other great resources. This month’s support group is Thursday May 12, and Dr. Edgar, myself, and the rest of the MDA team will be there this month to introduce ourselves to the group.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, and I’m happy to help in any way I can!
