Is My Weight an Important Factor When Undergoing Lipo?

Surgically, it is possible to alter the contour or shape of the body through various procedures such as liposuction (lipo for short). It is considered as a minimally invasive procedure because it only results in a very small scar, which means there is a small incision that is created in order to perform the procedure. The small incision gives way to the cannula so that it can reach the fatty layer in the area of the body that is targeted to be contoured.

It is important to note that a liposuction procedure is not a weight loss solution. Rather, it is a surgical technique for body contouring. The excess fat cells are not only found in patients who are overweight; that is why those who are not overweight may also choose to undergo lipo procedure. They may also have stubborn pockets of fat that they want to remove in order to make their body look sexier. Similarly, those who are overweight may opt to go through with the procedure, although patients should take note that the more overweight they are, the riskier it is. This is the reason why some surgeons suggest to their patients to lose weight first before undergoing lipo procedure.

To really consider the liposuction procedure, patients, no matter what their weight is, should be assessed by their chosen surgeon to determine if their goals can really be achieved through the procedure. Patients must have realistic goals, and this can be further explained by the surgeon with whom they are working with. Patients must remember that losing weight is not the main goal of undergoing liposuction procedure, but it is more for contouring or shaping the body. If the goals are doable, then the surgeon may schedule the patient for the procedure.

Patients who wish to undergo this procedure must also have a stable weight. Whether they are overweight or not, their weight must remain the same for a few months to a year. This is to make sure that the contouring done through the liposuction procedure remains. If a patient loses or gains a significant amount of weight, you can expect the contour of the body to change because the fat cells are increased or diminished, as the case may be. It is also possible that the body can look disproportionate due to the results of the liposuction coupled with the great increase or decrease in weight.

The health of the patient should also be considered when deciding to go for a liposuction procedure. Those who are overweight and have a BMI (body mass index) of greater than thirty are more at risk of developing complications. Due to their weight, it is also possible that they already have a disease that is contraindicated for liposuction. Just to be sure, the surgeon may ask the patient to undergo certain tests to make sure of his/her health. A healthy patient is more likely to recover well and immediately after the surgery. On the other hand, it would be more difficult for the body of a patient with a disease to repair and recover the damages sustained due to the surgery.
