Key takeaways:

  • Qdata Cataracts includes real-world data from more than 9 million patients.
  • Verana Health aims to optimize care by collecting data on surgical techniques, IOLs and patient characteristics.

Verana Health launched a real-world dataset on cataract surgery outcomes, according to a press release.

“Qdata Cataracts is a unique real-world dataset that enables precise analysis of patients undergoing cataract surgery while also tracking their outcomes through structured codes and unstructured clinical notes of electronic health records,” Sujay Jadhav, CEO of Verana Health, told Healio. “Variations in surgical techniques, IOL models and patient characteristics can impact outcomes, making real-world data essential for understanding long-term effectiveness and optimizing patient care.”

The module is powered by the American Academy of Ophthalmology IRIS Registry and includes data from more than 9 million patients who underwent cataract surgery, with an average follow-up of nearly 4 years, the release said. Using AI, Qdata Cataracts extracts patient variables from clinical notes and EHRs, including visual acuity, IOP levels, and IOL brand and model.

Qdata Cataracts is designed to collect more detailed information than what can be obtained through claims data, including cohort identification, patient stratification and real-world outcomes analysis.

In 2024, Verana launched the Qdata Uveitic Macular Edema module, as previously reported by Healio.

“The Academy’s IRIS Registry is the world’s largest specialty society clinical data registry in all of medicine and the first comprehensive eye disease clinical registry in the U.S.,” Jadhav said. “Life sciences companies often use this information for a wide variety of purposes including retrospective and prospective studies, comparative effectiveness research, health economics and outcomes research, long-term safety assessments, and market research and targeting.”
