Key takeaways:

  • RetInSight’s algorithms analyze OCT images to detect and monitor retinal diseases.
  • The acquisition will bring AI-powered monitoring to the Harmony clinical data management system.

Topcon Healthcare acquired RetInSight, an Austria-based company that develops AI-driven software for eye care professionals, according to a Topcon press release.

RetInSight’s AI algorithms, which detect and monitor retinal diseases by analyzing clinical OCT images, will now be integrated with Harmony, Topcon’s clinical data management system.

"This empowers both primary and specialist eye care providers to deliver timely, personalized care across different platforms for diverse clinical settings," Amir Sadeghipour, PhD, said.

“RetInSight’s OCT-based AI expertise will help our global network of partners rapidly deploy innovations,” Ali Tafreshi, CEO and president of Topcon Healthcare, said in the release. “Integrated with our Harmony vendor-inclusive digital information system, we’re delivering clinical decision support and a scalable ecosystem for AI deployment.”

RetInSight’s technology is also used to support pharmaceutical trials and the advancement of products through FDA regulatory pathways, according to the release.

“At RetInSight, our mission is to revolutionize [eye care] through reliable, affordable and easy-to-use AI-based software that enables efficient and high-quality management of retinal diseases,” Amir Sadeghipour, PhD, managing director at RetInSight, told Healio. “In line with Topcon Healthcare’s vendor-inclusive strategy for delivering digital health care solutions — and supported by their global reach — we are accelerating the adoption of AI technology. This empowers both primary and specialist eye care providers to deliver timely, personalized care across different platforms for diverse clinical settings.”

According to Topcon’s website, the Harmony system streamlines the workflow of eye care practices, integrates with instruments and presents a comprehensive overview of patients’ clinical data, among other features.

Topcon Healthcare also launched the Institute for Digital Health (IDHea), a platform that provides access to real-world and clinical trial datasets from primary eye care and primary care screening settings, according to a separate press release.

The goal of the platform is to “transform clinical data into actionable insights through AI-powered analytics and seamless connectivity,” the release said. It includes real-world data from 41 primary eye care locations and 643 primary care screening locations, as well as clinical trial data on healthy eyes from four locations, according to the IDHea website.
