Teladoc Health, a virtual care company, unveiled its new Cardiometabolic Health Program on Tuesday to prevent the advancement of diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

Purchase, New York-based Teladoc Health serves both employers and health plans. In addition to support for weight management and diabetes, it offers mental health care, primary care and specialty services.

The new program provides a premium subscription to BetterSleep, an app that’s focused on improving sleep quality. Patients also gain access to one-on-one support with a registered dietitian, outreach from health coaches, at-home testing for cardiometabolic measures and health insights from connected devices (like blood glucose meters). The program is available to those with a body mass index of 25 or above.

“The reality is that many of the most prevalent chronic conditions of our time – including type 2 diabetes and diseases of the heart, liver, kidney – share a lot in common in how they develop (such as insulin resistance and chronic inflammation), which means there’s also a real opportunity to address these upstream factors and prevent these conditions from developing in the first place,” said Calvin Wu, M.D., clinical strategy director of Teladoc Health, in an email.

“This program builds upon our established solutions with new features to effectively promote healthy lifestyle behaviors and provide members with the personalized education and support they need to live their healthiest lives,” he continued.

The company’s clinical approach is based on the American Heart Association’s Life’s Essential 8, which are key measures for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health. These include eating better, being more active, quitting tobacco, getting healthy sleep, managing weight, controlling cholesterol, managing blood sugar and managing blood pressure.

Research shows that there is a need for better cardiometabolic health support: Just 12% of adults in the U.S. have good cardiometabolic health. This is what Teladoc Health hopes to change.

“Our goal is better cardiometabolic health — not just addressing a specific condition or risk factor. No matter what brings a member into our program, we’re going to care for their entire cardiometabolic health need,” Wu said. “For example, a person with diabetes will be asked about weight, cholesterol and mental health as part of their cardiometabolic health assessment. Based on the results, we make recommendations related to which essential lifestyle behaviors they can improve to see better outcomes for their diabetes and overall cardiometabolic health.”

Teladoc Health has had a busy year so far. It announced in February that it is acquiring virtual preventive care company Catapult Health for $65 million. In January, it joined Amazon’s Health Benefits Connector.

Teladoc isn’t the only company providing cardiometabolic support. Others include Virta Health and Vida Health.
