A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that adolescents who underwent gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy maintained weight loss and achieved remission of obesity-related conditions, such as diabetes, 10 years after the surgery. Participants experienced a mean BMI decrease of 20%, with more than half of those with type 2 diabetes or hypertension at baseline achieving remission. The study, a follow-up to the Teen-LABS study, included 161 adolescents who received gastric bypass surgery and 99 who received sleeve gastrectomy. The researchers emphasized the long-term durability of weight loss and remission of coexisting conditions after bariatric surgery.
