Leading expert in Neuro-Oncology and Sports-related Brain Injury joins Blackrock Health’s Hermitage Clinic
Blackrock Health has announced the appointment of leading neurosurgeon Professor Philip J. O’Halloran at the Hermitage Clinic. The appointment reflects Blackrock Health’s ongoing commitment to offering cutting-edge care for patients with complex neurological conditions.

Professor O’Halloran is the only Neurosurgeon in Ireland to be awarded a PhD in the field of Neuro-Oncology and holds a PhD in the molecular biology of high-grade brain tumours. In April 2025, he was appointed as Neurotrauma Lead for the Society of British Neurological Surgeons.
Prior to joining Blackrock Health, he served as Consultant Neurosurgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Prof O’Halloran was previously the Dan Rooney Concussion Fellow in Pittsburgh, in recognition of the former US ambassador to Ireland and of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has extensive experience of managing sports related brain injuries in amateur and elite athletes for over a decade.
A key opinion leader in Traumatic Brain Injury and Neuro-Oncology, Prof O’Halloran is the principal investigator of the internationally recognised Rugby Headgear Effectiveness Study, in collaboration with IRFU and World Rugby. He also serves on the board of the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine and is an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Neurosurgery.
