Padinharath Krishnakumar was born on 15 May 1961 in the village of Kodolipram in Kerala, India, to parents who were schoolteachers. He graduated from Calicut Medical College in 1987 and went on to complete postgraduate degrees in psychiatry at Madras Medical College in 1998 and in paediatrics at Calicut Medical College in 2002.
