A new D2C digital health app for women emerged from stealth on Thursday.

San Francisco-based Trellis Health launched with $1.8 million in pre-seed funding. The platform helps women easily access and understand their medical records so they can make better health decisions during pregnancy and throughout their lives.

“Trellis Health is tackling the systemic problems in women’s healthcare around pregnancy, postpartum and family health — and the long term role this phase in life has on lifetime health and wellbeing. Despite advancements in medicine and technology, maternal health and postpartum care are underdeveloped in the U.S. Women are left without the tools, support or information they need during some of the most critical and demanding times in their lives,” said CEO Estelle Giraud.

This problem is usually coupled with snowballing caregiving responsibilities, as new mothers  typically become the central manager of family healthcare, she pointed out.

Many women take on this role, but they lack the tools to be able to keep track of care efficiently in today’s hyperfragmented healthcare system, Giraud declared.

She described Trellis’ target customer as “the modern woman navigating stages of health throughout her life, starting with pregnancy and postpartum, and continuing through a lifetime of pivotal health moments.”

The startup uses a patient’s health history to create “personalized models and unique-to-you baselines” to support their health management in tandem with doctors and maternity specialists, Giraud said. Users have access to health information via an in-app chat function with a certified nurse midwife as well, she added.

Trellis also uses predictive symptom tracking, generates questions for a patient’s care team ahead of every appointment, and offers an in-app companion to reduce the added mental load of health management, Giraud stated.

The company employs an internal provider team, and it also has contracts with other providers offering specialized services for pregnancy and postpartum care, such as lactation consultants and mental health professionals.

Trellis doesn’t take insurance.

“It is a consumer direct platform with an annual subscription fee designed for wide-spread accessibility, including HSA/FSA payment option. Trellis also has a program built to support those in need of financial assistance with a goal of continuing to work towards improving maternal health outcomes across all populations,” Giraud remarked.

She acknowledged there are many other pregnancy apps on the market — but she pointed out that Trellis is unique because almost all of them are focused on the baby or what gear to buy.

“Unlike other digital health solutions that focus on single stages of life, Trellis Health is creating a comprehensive operating system for women’s lifetime health. The AI-driven platform integrates years of medical history, unifies fragmented health data, and provides continuous, personalized insights and day-by-day support to empower women with proactive and intelligent care,” she explained.
