He set his mind on becoming a doctor and applied to the London Hospital in 1943. An air raid warning interrupted his interview with the dean of the school, who accepted him on the way to the shelter. He qualified in 1948 and joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) medical branch in 1949.He worked at the ophthalmic department and the Institute of Aviation Medicine in Farnborough until 1953. During his time there he created a test for the speed of focal accommodation—the eye’s ability to change focus—which was related to the invention of the head-up display that was later fitted to British fighter planes.
