A major highlight was the keynote address from internationally renowned cardiologist Professor Valentin Fuster (Mount Sinai, USA and National Centre for Cardiovascular investigation, Spain), who delivered a compelling talk on ‘Evolving Challenges in Health and Disease: Technology and Education’. His insights sparked a dynamic Q&A session, with active participation from both in-person and online attendees with many praising the session for its insightful topics. The session included a light-hearted moment as Prof. Fuster was reminded that he inspired Dr. Ruster, a heart-healthy character on Sesame Street.

The programme featured an exceptional line up of speakers and explored a wide range of pressing topics in cardiovascular medicine:

  • Professor John McMurray (Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Scotland) outlined recent therapeutic advances in heart failure and emerging treatments in the pipeline.
  • Professor Adnan Kastrati (Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany) shared the latest evidence and practice in antiplatelet therapy for ACS and PCI.
  • Dr Róisín Colleran (Mater Private Network, Dublin) discussed the work of the Lancet Commission on Coronary Artery Disease and implications for clinical practice.
  • Dr John P. Foran (Mater Private Network, Cork) explored innovations in left atrial appendage management,
  • Dr Colm Hanratty (Mater Private Network, Dublin) shared insights from the front lines of complex PCI.
  • Professor Gábor Széplaki (Mater Private Network, Dublin) presented on developments in catheter ablation for cardiac arrhythmia, with many attendees describing him as “an inspirational speaker,”
  • Dr Alexander Lyon (Royal Brompton Hospital, UK) introduced attendees to the rapidly growing field of Cardio-Oncology.
  • Dr Nicola Cochrane (Carrig Clinic, Ireland) addressed the emerging connection between menopause and cardiovascular risk, a topic of increasing relevance to primary and specialist care.
  • Andrew Dunne, (Personal Health Medical Exercise Clinic™, Ireland) highlighted the growing evidence base for exercise as medicine, offering practical guidance for integrating physical activity into patient care.

During the event, RCSI Year 5 student Renitha Reddi was awarded the Heart Summit Poster Prize and received a €500 educational travel bursary for her work. Her poster, titled ‘Pre-Percutaneous Coronary Intervention C-Reactive Protein Levels and In-Stent Restenosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis,’ was highly commended by the judging panel. Renitha, who has just completed her final exams in the MB, BCh, BAO (Hons) programme, was praised for the quality and relevance of her research.

Professor Robert Byrne, Director of Cardiology at Mater Private Network and Professor of Cardiovascular Research at RCSI, commented “The Dublin Heart Summit is about bringing together thought leaders and clinicians to accelerate improvements in cardiovascular outcomes. With cardiovascular disease remaining the leading cause of death and disability in Ireland, it is vital that we support knowledge exchange, promote research, and embrace clinical innovation.”

The next Dublin Heart Summit will take place on Saturday, 18 April 2026.
