Health of world’s teens is at “tipping point,” expert commission warns

The overall health of adolescents worldwide is at risk of worsening in the coming years despite some improvements in the past decade, an international report has concluded.

The Lancet commission on adolescent health and wellbeing warned that the health of adolescents (described as being aged 10-24 years) is in a precarious position, with progress slowed by the covid-19 pandemic and funding difficulties.1

Since the first Lancet commission on adolescent health and wellbeing in 2016,2 progress has been “mixed and uneven,” with some improvements in educational participation and reduced smoking and alcohol use undermined by rising prevalence of diseases related to obesity and mental health disorders in all regions and new threats such as the climate emergency and the shift towards a more digital world, it said.
