Any future assisted dying services in the UK should not be based in general practice, nor should any doctor be forced to be involved in them, GPs have insisted.Representatives at the annual UK conference of local medical committees (LMCs) in Glasgow overwhelmingly passed a motion that said that if any assisted dying legislation becomes law, GPs should not be compelled to participate in or initiate discussions about assisted dying, while medical involvement in any assisted dying should sit with a separate service and not general practice.GPs also voted overwhelmingly to support the motion’s insistence that there be no risk of professional sanction or discrimination if a doctor refused to be involved in assisted dying.GPs agreed that the provision of effective and properly resourced palliative care should be delivered in addition to the option of assisted dying if it became law and there should be new funding for such services.Jennifer Liddell…
