Key takeaways:
- Deseyne lenses are embedded with bioactive substances that are gradually released to improve hydration.
- The lenses will be available for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
The FDA approved the Deseyne daily disposable contact lens, which steadily releases bioactive substances that improve hydration and aid comfort, according to a press release from Bruno Vision Care.
Paul M. Karpecki, OD, FAAO, of Kentucky Eye Institute, was involved in a study of the lens and described the approval as “extremely exciting.”

The FDA approved the Deseyne daily disposable contact lens, which steadily releases bioactive substances to improve hydration and aid comfort.
“This is the only patented solution in the world that uses contact lenses as a delivery system,” he told Healio. “I conducted the U.S. feasibility study [comparing] the Deseyne contact lens to various habitual, successfully fit contact lenses on the market and have never seen a technology dominate to this level.”
The lens is made with an enriched hydrogel material called vifilcon C, according to the release, and embedded with substances that the company calls Lachryceuticals, which include amino acids, vitamins and polysaccharides. A patented delivery system, called FusionTechnology, relies on body temperature, blinking and eyelid pressure to enable a controlled, gradual release of Lachryceuticals to the eye’s anterior segment to form “a natural bio-copolymer” that “blend[s] seamlessly with the eye’s natural tear film, improving hydration, comfort and stability.”
“The result is a lens that allows more people to wear contacts comfortably, provides existing wearers with greater hydration and clearer vision, and makes fitting easier for eye care professionals,” Eddie Catalfamo, CEO of Bruno Vision Care, said in the release. “It’s a true breakthrough for the industry and a game changer for consumers.”
The lenses are manufactured in spherical or toric configurations for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, with power ranging from –20 D to +20 D. The spherical lenses have a base curve of 8.6 mm and a diameter of 14.1 mm, while the toric lenses have a base curve of 8.5 mm and a diameter of 14.4 mm. Cylinder in the toric lenses ranges from –1 D to –3.5 D, with an axis from 5° to 180° in 5° steps.
The lenses are 60% water by weight in a saline solution that also contains hyaluronic acid and tamarind seed polysaccharide polymers, according to the company.
Deseyne contact lenses are expected to be available on the U.S. market in the fourth quarter, according to the release.
Bruno Vision Care told Healio that it is “working on a next-generation lens” to address presbyopia, adding that it is “not a multifocal lens.”
“Our technology reimagines how optical science approaches clarity [and] comfort without the need for cognitive adaptation,” the company said. “Ours is a biological approach to vision health.”
