News reports about politicians and government officials ignoring guidelines during the pandemic was a turning point for many people, the UK covid inquiry heard.1The inquiry’s Every Story Matters team gathered testimonies from tens of thousands of people at drop-in events across the UK, through targeted research with specific groups, and online. Their latest report brings together contributors’ experiences of the different test, trace, and isolate systems that were introduced during the pandemic. The report was published on 12 May to coincide with the first day of public hearings for the inquiry’s module covering test, trace, and isolate. The team’s first report, in September 2024,2 covered healthcare systems and a second, in January 2025, covered vaccines and therapeutics.Many contributors to the report said that they did not understand why they should self-isolate if those in leadership positions were not following the rules.
