SEVILLE, Spain — In this Healio Video Perspective, Andrew G. Lee, MD, discusses whether temporal artery ultrasound can be used in place of temporal artery biopsy in the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis.
At the Congress on Controversies in Ophthalmology, Lee and Susan Mollan, MBChB, FRCOphth, PhD, debated this issue.
“This is a big controversy between the Americas and Europe,” he said. “The American recommendation is that it is not good enough to use in place of the temporal artery biopsy, but the European League Against Rheumatism has agreed in principle that temporal artery ultrasound has a place for initial evaluation for giant cell arteritis.”
Lee described specific cases in which he believes that temporal artery ultrasound may be used as an alternative to biopsy.
