Babies born after fertility treatment have higher risk of heart defects, results suggest

A study published in the European Heart Journal found that babies conceived through assisted reproductive technology, such as IVF, have a 36% higher risk of being born with a major heart defect. The research, led by Professor Ulla-Britt Wennerholm, analyzed data from over 7.7 million liveborn children in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The study showed that the risk of heart defects was similar regardless of the type of assisted reproduction used, but was greater in multiple births. The findings are important as congenital heart defects are common and can be life-threatening, highlighting the need for early diagnosis and appropriate care.
