Assisted dying bill clears first hurdle in Scotland

Scotland has taken a step closer to legalising assisted dying after an emotional five hour parliamentary debate and a close vote.But the bill proposing the changes faces further hurdles and additional scrutiny, as two further votes are expected later this year. During the debate the Scottish parliament heard strong opposition and significant concerns from some MSPs about how the measure would work in practice.The vote to approve the general principles of the bill was passed by 70 votes to 56. This is the third time that Scotland has attempted to legalise assisted dying and the first time a vote for this change has been won.
