AACR CEO urges cancer researchers to speak out against cuts

AACR’s big annual meeting began as usual with its large opening ceremony, but AACR CEO Margaret Foti’s closing remarks were very much out of the ordinary. She delivered a condemnation of the Trump administration’s actions on science and health policy in the past hundred days. That included “major funding freezes for leading research institutions across the nation” and “numerous executive orders and other proposals that have the potential to irreparably damage NIH,” she said.

AACR has long advocated in Washington for cancer research, playing a central role in organizing congressional briefings, demonstrations, and pulling together various groups to push for more funding for cancer science. AACR, Foti said, is planning demonstrations and events that will try to bring representatives and scientists across the country, and she encouraged attendees to take part.
