A study conducted at the University of Birmingham found that babies as young as four months old show signs of self-awareness. Researchers showed the babies a ball on a screen moving towards or away from them, accompanied by a tactile stimulus. The study found that even at four months, babies show enhanced somatosensory brain activity when a touch is preceded by an object moving toward them. The older babies showed signs of surprise when the touch was preceded by an object moving away, suggesting that their awareness of their body’s position in space is developing. Researchers are hoping to expand the study with newborn babies to explore the origins of human consciousness.
