A recent cohort study in the US examined the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. They found a reduction in UTI diagnoses during the early pandemic period with no change in disease severity. The study used a commercial claims database with data on over 13 million privately insured children. Results showed a decrease in UTI diagnoses and severity measures during the early pandemic, but rates returned to pre-pandemic levels afterwards. The study highlights the importance of understanding UTI epidemiology in children for clinical care, resource prioritization, policy-making, and antimicrobial stewardship.
