Women with metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) face a higher risk of cirrhosis, while men have increased risks of hepatocellular carcinoma, hepatic decompensation, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and non–sex-specific cancers. A cohort study examined outcomes in adults with MASLD, finding that women had higher rates of liver adverse events, while men faced higher risks of non-liver adverse events. The results suggest the need for sex-based preventive and therapeutic strategies for MASLD. The study, led by Dr. Taotao Yan at Stanford University Medical Center, emphasizes significant sex differences in the risk of adverse events in MASLD patients. Further research is recommended to explore these associations in different populations and regions.
