The UK Medical Research Council plans to redirect funding to new centres of research excellence (CoREs), potentially forcing existing MRC research units to close. More than 500 scientists and academics have expressed concern in an open letter to the science minister, warning that the new funding model will award large grants to newly created CoREs over a time-limited period. They believe this decision threatens the viability of the existing 19 MRC units located at UK universities with long and distinguished histories in medical research. Scientists are urging the minister to reconsider the move, emphasizing the uniqueness and importance of the MRC units in medical research.
