Experts from the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University are warning people to beware of counterfeit and illicit alcohol, not just abroad, but also in the UK. Recent cases in Istanbul, Laos, and Fiji have highlighted the dangers of toxic alcohol. Counterfeit spirits can make up a significant portion of consumption in some areas, costing the EU billions annually. The warning includes signs to look out for when purchasing alcohol and emphasizes the importance of being vigilant. Researchers are developing a database of chemical fingerprints of authentic spirits to help detect counterfeits and protect consumers and manufacturers.
