Research from Tallaght Hospital found that a total of 105 patients were admitted to the emergency department with e-scooter related injuries in a year, with more than half requiring specialist follow-up. Ten percent needed emergency surgery, with fractures being the most common injury. The average age of patients was 33.6 years, with the majority being male. Legislation around e-scooter use was introduced in May, with calls for mandatory helmets for users. The authors of the research highlighted the risks associated with e-scooter usage and the potential for severe accidents and injuries.
